Pakistan lauds Oscar-winning filmmaker

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's prime minister has lauded Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for becoming the first filmmaker from the country to win an Oscar.
She received the award Monday for a documentary about female acid attack victims in Pakistan. She dedicated the prize to women in the country working for change.
The documentary "Saving Face" chronicles a British plastic surgeon who treated acid victims. It was co-directed by Daniel Junge.
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said the government would grant Chinoy a civil award.
Mistreatment of women is widespread in Pakistan, a conservative Muslim country where many people are poor and lack basic education.
The media frequently reports acid attacks by husbands angry at their wives or young men spurned by women.

PCB searches for venue for Australia ODIs

Misbah-ul Haq and others during a practice session in Dubai.—AFP
LAHORE: Pakistan are looking for a suitable venue to stage their one-day series against Australia later this year, an official said Saturday.
Pakistan have been forced to play their home series at the neutral venues of United Arab Emirates, New Zealand and England since international cricket was halted in their country after attacks on the Sri Lankan team bus in 2009.
Australia have not toured Pakistan since 1998, forcing them to play in Sri Lanka and Sharjah (2002) and in England in 2010.
They have five one-day matches scheduled for August this year and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief operating officer Subhan Ahmad said three venues were under consideration.
“We are looking out for a suitable venue for the five one-days against Australia as it would be very hot to play in the UAE in mid-August,” Ahmad told AFP.
The three available options are South Africa, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and we are looking at these venues, Ahmed said.
The PCB is also seeking the return of international cricket to their country and have invited Bangladesh to play a one-day series in April.
A Bangladesh delegation is expected to tour Pakistan to assess security before deciding on the series.

Qatar named the richest country in the world

Qatar has been ranked as the world’s wealthiest country in a new list compiled by US magazine Forbes.
With UAE placed sixth and Kuwait at 15th in the list the Gulf emirate of 1.7 million people topped the list as the world’s richest country per capita thanks to a rebound in oil prices and its massive natural gas reserves.
Qatar, which will host the 2022 World Cup and is also in the running for the 2020 Olympic Games, has been a high-profile investor in recent times.
The government is pouring money into infrastructure, including a deepwater seaport, an airport and a railway network, all with an eye to making the country a better host for businesses and the 2022 World Cup, Forbes said.
Luxembourg was placed second, with a per capita GDP of just over $81,000.
In third place was Singapore, which thrives as a technology, manufacturing and finance hub with a GDP (PPP) per capita of nearly $56,700.
To rank the countries, Forbes said it looked at GDP per capita adjusted for purchasing power for 182 nations. It used International Monetary Fund data from 2010.
Norway and Brunei rounded out the top five positions in the list followed by the UAE, the US, Hong Kong, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
A trio of politically and economically fragile African nations was listed as the poorest countries – Burundi, Liberia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where GDPs (PPP) per capita was $400, $386 and $312, respectively.

First T20: Pakistan to face England today

England have retained Alastair Cook, originally not named in the Twenty20 squad.

Pakistan and England are  ready to compete in first of three Twenty 20 international match in Dubai today.

Pakistan captain Misbah ul-Haq said his side are desperate to redress the balance in a T20 after a one-day series whitewash by the tourists.

England on Tuesday completed a 4-0 rout over the Pakistanis, and showed a big improvement from their 3-0 defeat in the preceding three-Test series.

Misbah wants his side to regain the upper hand, but also wants to use the match as a stepping stone towards the World Twenty20 series later this year.

England have retained Alastair Cook, originally not named in the Twenty20 squad, after he showed great form in scoring back-to-back hundreds in the first two one-day matches.

England skipper in the T20 series Stuart Broad said his side would be using every opportunity possible to help prepare them for the defence of their World Twenty20 title.

“Cookie is keen to play Twenty20 cricket. He has made that pretty obvious. He has been kept on in the squad because obviously we have got some injury concerns in the squad,” said Broad of Cook, retained as cover-up for injured Ravi Bopara.

Hina Rabbani Khar: A different type of relationship has been pursued

Hina Rabbani Khar: A different type of relationship has been pursued in the dark of night and a different type in daylight. We hope to be able to combine the two and bring this relationship credibility (in the eyes of) the people of Pakistan.
I think this relationship has been missing a great deal of credibility and a lot of that is because the relationship has always peaked during dictatorships and because a lot of the terms of the relationship are not very transparent. What this government is doing is trying to get some of that credibility back. Once you are able to do that I think we will turn out to be much more effective partnership.

PM decries US bill on Balochistan

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani - AP Photo
KARACHI: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday took exception to two pronouncements made in the United States on Pakistan this week — the bill tabled in the House espousing self-determination for Balochistan and the statement warning Islamabad against going ahead with the Iran gas pipeline project.
The prime minister said he was dismayed to learn about the bill since it constituted challenging Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Republican Dana Rohrabacher moved the bill in the House of Representatives on Friday. An excerpt from the draft resolution read: “The Baloch people have the right to self-determination and to their own sovereign country and they should be afforded the opportunity to choose their own status.”
About the gas pipeline, Mr Gilani said no pressure would be acceptable from the US and “we will definitely go ahead with the project”. He was speaking to media after a ground-breaking ceremony of a project for upgradation of six berths at the Karachi Port.
The prime minister parried queries about his trial for contempt of court, saying the matter was sub judice. “Since the case is still being heard in the Supreme Court, I cannot speak on it.”
People need not worry and let the Supreme Court decide about his fate, Mr Gilani remarked.
The premier seemed perturbed on being asked to clarify Pakistan’s position on restoration of US and Nato supplies. “If we can take extreme measures like stopping Nato supplies and declining to attend a conference (in Bonn) on Afghanistan, we can take any action and decision in the national interest,” he retorted.
However, when a questioner pointed out that Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar had recently told media that Nato supplies had been restored, Yousuf Raza Gilani asked him to put the question to the minister.
Referring to the summit with Afghanistan and Iran, he said Islamabad was committed to good relations with all neighbouring countries.
Minister: The foreign minister termed the bill in the US House of Representatives an isolated move by a few individuals, agencies add.
She recalled that the National Assembly had unanimously adopted a resolution condemning a recent open hearing on Balochistan by the Foreign Affairs Sub-Committee on Oversight and Investigations.
Hina Rabbani Khar said the National Assembly resolution had represented the legitimate reaction of the people of Pakistan.
“An unfriendly and irresponsible attempt by a few individuals in Washington is aimed at creating distrust between the people of the two countries,” she observed.
She expressed the hope that the bill would not sail through the House as “a vast majority of US Congressmen cherish friendly relations with Pakistan”.

Off The Record with Kashif Abbasi – 15th feb 2012 – Imran Khan

Dr. Shakeel Afridi was in the thick of the hunt for Osama bin Laden

Dr. Shakeel Afridi was in the thick of the hunt for Osama bin Laden. At the request of the CIA, which had reason to think the al Qaeda leader was holed up in a high-walled compound in Abbottabad, the doctor had mounted a fake hepatitis-immunization program. Having spearheaded several polio-immunization drives over the years, Afridi knew how to stage the campaign convincingly. Renting a house near the compound, he hired a local nurse who thought the drive was genuine. The idea was for her to visit the compound and get a blood sample from at least one of the children who lived there. If the kids in the compound were bin Laden’s, DNA from the sample would tell the Americans they were on the right track.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta recently acknowledged that Afridi’s efforts were “very helpful” in the run-up to the U.S. raid that killed bin Laden last May. Now, however, Afridi is in a world of trouble. Three weeks after the raid, Pakistani intelligence officers arrested him. His Pakistani-born wife (an American citizen) and children have vanished from the family’s Peshawar home.
