Bin Laden lived 9 years undetected in Pakistan, fathered 4 children, wife says

Former Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden entered Pakistan across the Afghan border during the early months of U.S. attacks on Afghanistan, then spent nine years on the run in Pakistan living in several safe houses and fathering four children.
Testimony from bin Laden's youngest wife -- the 29-year-old Yemenite Amal Ahmed Abdulfattah -- before a joint investigation team in Pakistan reveals the Al Qaeda kingpin fled over the border into Pakistan early in 2002, just after the U.S. launched attacks on Tora Bora in eastern Afghanistan.

In the testimony -- first cited Thursday by the Pakistani newspaper Dawn -- Abdulfattah told investigators that she married bin Laden in 2000 because she wanted to marry a mujahid, or holy warrior.
Her account of bin Laden's movements in the nine years leading up to his death in May 2011 raises further questions about what exactly Pakistani authorities knew.
It also threatens to further strain relations between Pakistan and the U.S., just days after U.S. military commanders held high-level meetings with their Pakistani counterparts in an attempt to repair ruptured relations between the two nations.
Abdulfattah said the family separated and fled from its base in Kandahar following the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. She traveled to Karachi, and was eventually reunited with bin Laden in Peshawar in 2002.
During her testimony, Adbdulfattah said the family's movements and accommodation in Pakistan were organized by "some Pakistani families" and Saad, one of bin Laden's sons.
After the family was reunited in Peshawar they traveled to the Swat Valley, close to the Afghan-Pakistani border, where they lived for eight or nine months.
After that the family moved to Haripur for two years, and later to Abbottabad. They stayed in Abbottabad for almost six years, until U.S. Navy SEALS raided bin Laden's home there in May 2011.
Abdulfattah was shot in the leg during the successful unilateral U.S. operation, but survived. Bin Laden's son Khalil, 20, was among four people killed in the raid.
Abdulfattah gave birth to four children by bin Laden while in Pakistan -- two in a government hospital in Haripur and two further children in Abbottabad.
She is now being held by Pakistani authorities in a house in Islamabad alongside two of bin Laden's other wives.
The widows, and two of bin Laden's daughters -- Maryam, 21, and Sumaya, 20 -- are expected to be charged Monday with breaking Pakistan's immigration laws. The offense carries a possible five-year jail sentence.
An editorial published in the Dawn newspaper Friday said Abdulfattah's testimony should force Pakistan to "take a long, hard look at its record against terrorism."
"For nine years the world's most wanted terrorist survived in the country after fleeing the U.S. attack on Tora Bora [in December, 2001]," it said.
"What is clear is that the judicial commission looking into his presence and the raid in Abbottabad can no longer limit its probe to those topics. In light of this investigation report, the commission now needs to expand its focus to encompass bin Laden's presence in the country since 2002," it added.

General Kayani told his visitors that he rejected the American military inquiry

General Kayani told his visitors that he rejected the American military inquiry into the Nov. 26 airstrikes. Army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, met with American military commanders — Gen. James Mattis, the central command leader, and Gen. John R. Allen, the top commander in Afghanistan — for the first time since American warplanes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers last November, in a visit that was seen as a first step in clearing the air between uneasy allies. Chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin E Dempsey told reporters that he had spoken with Pakistan Army chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani at least five times since the Salala incident in which 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed in a Nato air raid. “We want to rebuild the trust and confidence between our two militaries,” General Dempsey said. Gen Dempsey said he believes the two militaries can discuss what must be done in Pakistan’s federally administered tribal areas to improve the situation in both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

India not happy with Ajmal's bowling action: report

Senior Indian cricketers have reportedly complained to the International Cricket Council (ICC) over their suspicion on Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal's bowling action.
According to the sources, Senior players are of the view that Ajmal chucks while bowling. The 34-year-old
spinner took the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar in Sunday's Asia Cup clash at Mirpur where India chased 329 runs to crush Pakistan by 6 wickets.

Ajmal had earlier claimed to a BBC interview, that the ICC had allowed him leniency up to 23.5 degrees, which the PCB and ICC later denied.
As per the ICC rules a bowler can only straighten his arm up to 15 degrees, beyond which his action will be deemed illegal.
Ajmal's bowling action had come under suspicion for the first time in 2009 during ODI series against Australia but was cleared after remedial work by experts.
Once again, doubts were raised following his career-best 7-55 in the first Test against England, played in Dubai.
Former England pacer Bob Willis questioned his 'doosra' (second one) -- a ball which turns the other way than a normal off-break -- while England coach Andy Flower said he has his own opinion and left the matter to the ICC.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik has decided to sue Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Pakistan Muslim League – Quaid (PML-Q) Senator Mushahid Hussain for withdrawing Rs10 billion and Rs2 billion respectively from Intelligence Bureau’s (IB) account.
In a statement released by the interior ministry, Malik claimed that he was not aware of the Mehrangate issue as the interior ministry has nothing to do with the intelligence agency. “The ministry does not even control their finances and operations.”
The minister further said that Sharif and Hussain are trying to divert the attention of the public from former Mehran Bank chief Younis Habib’s allegations in the Mehrangate scandal.
Malik has ordered his lawyer to issue a notice to Sharif and Hussain in this regard, said the statement.
Earlier in a press conference held at Sharif’s residence in Lahore, the chief minister informed the media of taking action against Habib over his claim of giving hefty amounts to them.

ISLAMABAD: Following a lukewarm response to the government’s proposal to hold an all-party conference on the issue of Balochistan, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday asked Interior Minister Rehman Malik to visit the violence-hit province to supervise the implementation of the Aghaz-i-Haqooq-i-Balochistan package there.
According to a statement by the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, the decision to ask the minister to proceed to Quetta and “take further steps to implement the package” was taken by Mr Gilani after meeting Mr Malik.
The statement said that during the meeting Mr Malik briefed the prime minister on the law and order situation in the country.
Sources said the purpose behind sending the interior minister to Balochistan was to collect first-hand information about the situation obtaining there.
They said that Mr Gilani asked the minister to visit the province and formulate a comprehensive report on the matter.
In a related development, Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani and newly-elected senators from the province called on President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday.
Faryal Talpur was present on the occasion, an official statement said.
The senators-elect who met the president were Ali Madad Jattak, Nawabzada Saifullah Magsi, Sardar Fateh Mohammad Hasni, Rozi Khan Kakar, Mohammad Yousuf Baloch and Sabir Baloch.
On the occasion, Mr Zardari expressed the hope that the newly-elected senators would work with devotion to strengthen the democratic institutions in the country. They would also play an active role for the welfare and development of their areas, said the statement.

Rahul Dravid announces retirement from international cricket

BANGALORE: Batting great Rahul Dravid, the second most prolific batsman in the game's history and India's middle order bulwark for years, on Friday bid adieu to Test cricket, bringing down the curtains on a glorious 16-year career.

Rahul Dravid's glorious Test career Rahul Dravid Profile Statistical highlights of Rahul Dravid's Test career

The 39-year-old Dravid, a former India captain, became the first of the three ageing greats of Indian cricket, besides Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, to retire in the aftermath of India's disastrous Test tour of Australia.

"I would like to announce my retirement from international and domestic first-class cricket. It is 16 years since I played my first Test match for India and today I feel it is an time to move on. Once I was like every other boy in India, with a dream of playing for my country. Yet I could never have imagined a journey so long and so fulfilling," Dravid said at a press conference.

"No dream is ever chased alone. As I look back, I have many people to thank for teaching me and believing in me. My junior coaches in Bangalore and at various junior national camps inculcated in me a powerful love of the game which has always stayed with me," said Dravid who was flanked BCCI President N Srinivasan and former captain Anil Kumble.

"My coaches at the international level have added to my craft and helped shape my personality. The physios and trainers worked hard to keep me fit -- not an easy job -- and allowed me to play late into my 30s.

"The selectors, who rarely receive any credit in India, occasionally had more confidence in me than I had in myself and I am grateful for that. The various captains I played under offered me guidance and inspired me. Most of all I have to thank the teams I played with."

Dravid said he would leave the stage with wonderful memories he shared with his team-mates who are legends of the game.

"I was lucky in my early years to play for Karnataka team which was trying to forge itself into a strong side and they were years of fun and learning," he said.

"In the Indian team, I was fortunate to be part of a wonderful era when India played some of its finest cricket at home and abroad. Many of my teammates have become legends, not just in India but in the wider cricketing world. I admired them, learnt from them and I leave the game with wonderful memories and strong friendships. It is a great gift to have."

Characteristic to his simple but dignified approach to his cricket, David said he had tried to uphold the spirit of the game.

"My approach to cricket has been reasonably simple: it was about giving everything to the team, it was about playing with dignity and it was about upholding the spirit of the game. I hope I have done some of that. I have failed at times, but I have never stopped trying. It is why I leave with sadness but also with pride."

He also thanked the cricket fans for their support during his long career.

"Finally I would like to thank the Indian cricket fan, both here and across the world. The game is lucky to have you and I have been lucky to play before you. To represent India, and thus to represent you, has been a privilege and one which I have always taken seriously," he said.

Dravid had a disastrous tour of Australia where he scored only 194 runs in eight innings at an average of 24.25. Even more disappointing was that Dravid, known for his solid technique, was bowled in six out of the eight innings.

There was intense speculation about Dravid's future following the Australian tour and his decision to hang his boots will now turn focus on another batting great VVS Laxman who too had a disappointing tour.

Dravid had already announced his retirement from ODI cricket in England last year after been surprisingly recalled in the ODI team due to his stupendous performance during the Test series against England in which he scored three centuries.

Nicknamed 'The Wall' for his dour defence, the always thoughtful-looking Dravid walked into international cricket sunset after making his debut in June 1996 though he will lead the Jaipur-based Rajasthan Royals side in the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League.

Dravid ended his Test career with 13,288 runs -- behind only Tendulkar (15,470 in 188 Tests) -- in 164 matches, with 36 hundreds and 63 half centuries at an average of 52.31, the 270 againstPakistan being his highest score.

Initially considered a liability in the one-day arena, he re-invented his game over the years to meet the demands of the shorter format which he played from April 1996 to September 2011. He scored 10,889 runs from 344 ODIs with 12 centuries and 83 half centuries at an average of 39.16.

Under his captaincy between October 2005 and September 2007, India won Test series in the West Indies as well as England but had a disastrous World Cup in 2007 when they were knocked out in the first round of the tournament. He captained India in 25 Tests and 79 ODIs.

Dravid's captaincy coincided with Greg Chappell's controversial tenure as India coach, but that did not affect his performance with the bat, as he garnered 1736 runs at 44.51.

Never a natural athlete, Dravid's immense levels of concentration also came in handy as he also holds the world record of highest Test catches -- 210 -- mostly at the slip cordon. He overtookMark Waugh to become the most successful slip catcher in history. In addition to this, he has 196 catches in ODIs.

Asked how long he took to reach his decision to retire, Dravid said, "For a year now after each and every series I have assessed ... when I came back from Australia I wanted to take the emotion out of it and look at it dispassionately ... I have spoken to Sachin and to my team-mates and all of them were supportive.

Dravid denied that his poor form in Australia had been factor in his retirement decision.

"I would like to believe irrespective of how the Australian series had gone, I would have assessed a lot of things and come to the same conclusion.

"I don't think I based this decision on series, it's a culmination of a lot of things. These decisions are based on a lot of things."

"It was an honour and a privilege to play with the galaxy of cricketers I played with ... fortunate to play in an era which was pretty successful in Indian cricket, for me to be sharing a dressing room with them was an honour."

On the high and lows in his long career, David said, "When you play for 16 years, you will face highs and lows. There have been many disappointments and great highs. There is a huge sense of satisfaction that I have always given it my best shot. I have left no stone unturned in trying to become the best cricketer I can become. Absolutely no regrets."

Dravid said he thought it was right time for him to call it quits so that younger players take Indian cricket forward.

"I felt it was the right time for me to move on, for a next generation of cricketers to play and take the team forward ...a lot of these decisions just come to you in different ways ...I just felt the time was right. I needed to move on."

He said he has no regrets though it was a difficult decision to call it quits.

"Yes and no. It's all I've known, from that point of view it was a difficult decision. But I knew deep down the time was right. I was very happy and comfortable in what I had achieved and what I had done," he said.

On his critics, Dravid said, "You have to deal with criticism and praise as well."

Asked if there was a point that made him think of retiring, Dravid said, "There was no eureka moment ... for me it's come with a bit of contemplation, a bit of thought with the family ...

"If you make a decision during a series, then I think it is great. I have been part of nice farewells. But I made my decision now. Just to keep playing for the sake of playing one more match was not right. That's not how I have played the game. The only reason I played a cricket match for India was to try and win a match for India."

Asked if the nickname "The Wall" meant to him, Dravid, "I never took it seriously to be honest ... it was a nice line for newspapers ... I never thought of it, I know people called me that fondly so I respect it."

Dravid made it clear that apart from playing in the IPL, he will not play in any domestic cricket.

"Not really, I believe we have a lot of young talents in Karnataka. I felt I'd just be blocking a youngsters place by playing Ranji Trophy," said Dravid when asked if there was a temptation to consider a season in domestic cricket.

Dravid, who has played many match-winning innings in his long career, was hard-pressed to pick his favourite innings.

"Hard to pick one innings ... 180 at Kolkata, 233 in Adelaide... the couple of innings in Jamaicaon a low scoring wickets ... Headingley ... it's hard to pick one innings. It's hard to choose between your sons."

Asked if he has any future plan to play a role in Indian cricket, he said, "That's for other people for judge, not for me to make that decision. What will I do? I have the IPL and then a couple of months to relax. I have not decided. Come June I'll decide what lies ahead of me.

"A little bit of time away from the game will be good for me. A lot of people I respect have told me if you get away from the game for a while, it will give you a better perspective of it," he said.

India were battered and bruised in Test series in England and Australia, but Dravid refused to believe that Indian cricket at Test level has gone down.

"We are all disappointed about England and Australia. Having said that I believe Indian cricket is in a good place. There is a bunch of talented batsmen waiting in the wings. When I look back at myself as a 23 year old, I was no where near as talented as some of these kids. But talent alone is not enough. I hope two or three can establish themselves and play for the Indian team for a long time. It's going to be a challenging and interesting time."

LAHORE: Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ahmad Raza Tahir on Wednesday ordered an immediate crackdown against provocative and anti-religious material, and also directed the Traffic Police to take prompt action against sectarian advertisements pasted on the back of rickshaws in the city.
The orders were passed during the CCPO’s meeting with a ten-member delegation of ulema, led by Dr Raghib Hussain Naeemi. The meeting was also attended by DIG Operations Ghulam Mehmood Dogar and other high-ranking officials.
Dr Naeemi told The Express Tribune that they had met the CCPO to express their concerns regarding the registration of FIRs against ulema under the Amplifier Act, and that this was discrimination and should not focus on just one sect and others using amplifiers should also be tried. He also said that provocative advertisement on the back of rickshaws and other vehicles were discussed, and the CCPO was also asked to solve the issue regarding illegal occupation of Mosques. The CCPO informed them that the matter was sub judice and they should wait for the issue to be settled in court.

He also called on them to stop giving sectarian sermons and instead forge an atmosphere of unity and brotherhood among their followers.
The CCPO called on the ulema to spread a message of peace, unity and brotherhood among their followers to defeat the aims of anti-state elements. He said the ulema can play a leading role in the maintenance of law and order in Lahore and help thwart the designs of terrorists.
Tahir noted that all segments of society will have to join hands to eliminate terrorism. He also assured the delegation that he would take timely action on their demands.
The ulema also gave the CCPO assurance of their cooperation.
Other members of the delegation included Maulana Muhammad Ali Naqshbandi, Mufti Muhammad Imran, Mufti Muhammad Haseeb Qadri, Mufti Kareem Khan, Maulana Imran-ul-Haq Farooqi, Maulana Murtaza Hashmi and Maulana Mujahid Abdul Rasool.

Stolen NASA laptop contained space station control codes

A laptop stolen from NASA last year was unencrypted and contained command and control codes for the International Space Station on it, the agency's inspector general told a House subcommittee Wednesday.
In his testimony before a House Science, Space and Technology subcommittee, NASA Inspector General Paul Martin said the notebook computer stolen in March 2011 "resulted in the loss of the algorithms" used to control the space station. This particular laptop, Martin said, was one of 48 NASA notebooks or mobile devices stolen between April 2009 and April 2011.
Some of these thefts resulted in the leak of sensitive data "including export-controlled, Personally Identifiable Information, and third-party intellectual property," as well as Social Security numbers and data on NASA's Constellation and Orion programs, Martin said. [NASA Computer Hacked, Satellite Data Accessed]
The actual number of stolen and compromised devices could be much higher because NASA relies on employees to self-report incidents.
In an email, NASA spokesman Trent Perrotto told SecurityNewsDaily that "at no point in time have operations of the International Space Station been in jeopardy due to a data breach."
"NASA has made significant progress to better protect the agency's IT systems and is in the process of implementing the recommendations made by the NASA Inspector General in this area," Perotto added.
In 2011, NASA, which Martin rightly called a "target-rich environment for cyberattacks," was the target of 47 advanced persistent threats, 13 of which successfully compromised NASA computers.
